The image connection - why Rochester, New York is a fitting site for the 1994 Rochester Photographic Society of America Regional Convention, May 25-30, 1994

PSA Journal, Jan, 1994 by M. Larry Shillito

Stay Awhile

After the conference, there is much to see in this part of New York. There is Finger Lakes Racetrack in Canandaigua and Batavia Downs in Batavia, New York. Darien Lake Theme Park, an hour from Rochester, is New York State's premier family entertainment complex, featuring over 100 rides, shows, attractions, and a 2,000-site campground. Buffalo and Niagara Falls are only 90 miles away as well as old Fort Niagara. Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame lie to the southeast and Chataqua, the quaint Victorian village, is to the southwest. Directly south of Rochester is Corning, New York, home of the world renowned Corning Glass Center and the Museum of Glass and Hall of Science and Industry. At the Steuben Factory, you can watch skilled craftsman turn globs of molten glass into exquisite pieces of Steuben. You can follow the Erie Canal along its entirety. Starting in Lockport, New York, you can see the multiple-tiered locks that are still working. People still live in many of the stone or brick lock keeper's houses situated at the locks and love to talk to you and give you their history.

And, don't forget to visit all our Canadian friends in Ontario. One of the most interesting and scenic areas is the close-by Welland Canal where you can watch huge ocean-going vessels go through the locks. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a miniature Williamsburg. St. Catherines and Hamilton are two scenic and friendly cities. Kitchener and Waterloo are home to one of the largest Amish settlements outside Lancaster, Pennsylvania. And finally, there is Toronto, cosmopolitan jewel of Canada and a photographers' dream.
