The 1991 International Conference of Photography will be held at the Hilton Palacio Del Rio Hotel in San Antonio, Texas from Sept. 2 through Sept. 7, 1991. The International Conference Committee, with the fine help of the Division Program Directors, have planned an exciting program of events.
Monday, Sept. 2 has been designated as a "free day," to explore the colorful city of San Antonio on your own. A Tuesday tour, entitled "San Antonio--Picture Perfect," will feature the Japanese Tea Gardens, Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, Fort Sam Houston, the King William Historic District, Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo and the Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepcion. On Wednesday, a midday "Splendors of the River" tour will feature lunch at Boudro's, a leading San Antonio Restaurant. For further details regarding these outstanding tours, refer to the article "PSA the Texas Way," page 20-23, in the March, 1991 issue of the PSA Journal.
The membership meeting of the Society will take place on Wednesday evening, Sept. 4, with Dr. Ralph E. Venk, FPSA, presiding. The presentation of important reports and the announcement of major Society awards will be followed by an opportunity to "meet the officers."
The Kodak Show on Friday evening will feature a three part wide-screen presentation designed cooperatively with the National Geographic Society. The three parts include "The Women of Saudi Arabia," "Reflections" and "Geography; Opportunities of Discovery."
Lynda Stair, APSA, Color Slide Division Program Director, has arranged the following programs: Dr. James A. Reynolds will discuss the various aspects of composition technique; Jacob Mosser III, APSA, will present his new multi-media production, "Vision Muse," a transparent tapestry of image and melody, substance and fantasy--it is both the dream and the reality that is photography; Ellis M. Zacharias, APSA, will present his original instructional program "Through the Kaleidoscope;" Bob Westmoreland will discuss the five segments of basic photography--composition, interchangeable lenses, seeing, lens attachments and special techniques; and Gerald and Marcella Martin will present "From Kalamazoo to Kathmandu," featuring an overland bus trip to India. Irene Mudrak, APSA will show the CSD Winning Photo Essays.
Dr. Onas Scandrette, FPSA, Program Director of the Techniques Division reports Turner O. Veith, Jr., will discuss fine line and tone line printing techniques; Dr. Clark W. Biedel, FPSA, will relate the many problems while coping with difficult lighting conditions while on vacation and Silom Horwitz, FPSA, will review the latest in films available to photographers, and the relative merits of each. In the TD College format, Dr. Kenneth A. Deitscher, APSA, will demonstrate how filtered flash can be used to add interest in photography, Sherrill and Helen Lynch, APSA's, will provide valuable hints regarding photographing pets; M. Craig Carver, APSA, will show how to create successful glassware photographs and John Ford will describe the science of photographing crystals, using both photomacrography and photomicrography.
Dr. Lloyd Bever, Program Director of the Nature Division, has arranged several programs, including James P. Louthan, APSA, showing birds, animals and scenics found in the Northwest; Howard (FPSA) and Frances Kessler, whose instructional program will show the various species of wildlife found in the refuge areas and national parks; Thomas C. Ritter will portray on film "Landscapes Beyond the Imagination" in the area of southern Utah and Mary A. Mather will describe where to find photoscenic wildlife from the southwest to the northwest. William F. Henderson, APSA, will show the winning nature essay sets.
Dr. Robert Ulberg, APSA, Program Director of the Pictorial Print Division will have the following speakers: Arie Poldervaart will demonstrate the methods of making paper negatives; Fred Greene will discuss how to make high quality portraits using inexpensive equipment; James MacDonald will present techniques used in making cibachrome prints by controlled exposure and the development of film and Robert B. Gorrill will show how to photograph subjects at night using black and white film.
Dot Wohltman, FPSA, Program Director of the Photo-Travel Division, lists the following speakers and their programs: Lee Estes, FPSA, will show a comprehensive view of France and its people; Charles R. Osborn, FPSA, will have a spectacular multi-media show of patriotic themes of America; Jeanette R. Bowerman, FPSA, will acquaint the audience with the three aspects of photo-travel--individual slides, sequences, and slide shows and Dr. Lloyd J.Bever will share the land and monuments of the ancient Maya of Guatamala. Wade W. Clutton, FPSA, will show the winning Travel Sets and Travelettes from the recent competition, and Irene Mudrak, APSA, will be in charge of the Slide of the Year competition.
Pauline P. Sweezey, APSA, Program Director of the Stereo Division will have the following programs: Eugene M. Sire, FPSA, will present Edward Metzdorf, FPSA's program on a tour of Neuschwanstein Castle, abode of Mad King Ludwig; Dr. Paul R. Milligan will share hyperstereo images of the "Land of Enchantment" that is New Mexico; Norbert and Phyllis Rander, APSA's, will discuss techniques involved in creating soft focus images and Dr. Werner Weiser will offer a multi-media show including stereo images of Morocco, Corsica, Sardinia, Germany, Bretagne and Norway. Also, Dr. Melvin G. Henningsen, FPSA, will show the Stereo Hall of Fame #6 program.
