Topic: RSS FeedPermanent collections committee needs your help: members of PSA can provide biographical information about photographers represented in the society's collections - Photographic Society of America
PSA Journal, July, 1992 by Lee Estes
As Chairman of the Permanent Collections Committee, I find myself being queried about certain photographers whose work I may recognize immediately, but beyond that, I know nothing about them. Sometimes I may know their base of operation, date of birth, and if deceased, the year of death, and can, to a certain degree, research any exhibition record, but that doesn't give a lot of insight into the person's personality and/or stature among peers. We possess many fine works by persons we have little or no information about.
Listed on page 20 are the names of several people that some of you undoubtedly are familiar with or may have known personally. Also, if you have one of their works in your collections or have information about anyone who does, whether listed or not, we would like to hear from you.
Why do we need information such as this? Because the Long Range Planning Committee of PSA is considering ways and means to publicize our Society by utilizing the great asset we have in our collections. Among the possibilities are publishing articles in the PSA Journal showcasing portfolios by individuals represented in the collections where you need a bit more information than simply a title of the pictures. Later on, we may wish to publish some "fine art" photographic books with a need for biographical material. Occasionally, we have queries from various institulions concerning works and their makers. In that regard, we are, at this moment corresponding with Harvard University about a European photographer who is represented by 13 pieces in our collections.
