Cartoons for Children's Rights - Brief Article

UN Chronicle, Winter, 1999

To foster children's rights in the new millennium, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is using the tool of animation. The Cartoons for Children's Rights initiative has forged partnerships with nearly 70 animation studios in 32 countries that have developed 30-second public service announcements.

The animated television spots have aired on more than 2,000 stations globally in 160 countries to an estimated 1 billion people. "Animation is the perfect tool for informing children about their rights, and society about its obligations' says UNICEF. The Cartoon Network, the Government of Denmark, Christie's auction house and the School of Visual Arts support the initiative.
