Iran's reconstruction to be costly

UN Chronicle, Dec, 1991

The reconstruction of the physical infrastructure of Iran, damaged during its 10-year war with Iraq, will be a costly and lengthy process, a special UN mission has reported.

Led by former Under-Secretary-General Abdulrahim Abby Farah, the mission in May and June visited Iran to obtain information on the nature and extent of the damage and on the status of reconstruction efforts.

In its 31 July report (S/22863) to the Security Council, the team said that as the war was fought for the most part on Iranian territory, the consequences on its population, economy and environment had been enormous.

The mission was impressed by the reconstruction efforts that had already been undertaken. Nonetheless, access to financing resources, foreign equipment and technology from the international community would be necessary to fully rehabilitate the country within a reasonable period of time.
