Security subject of talks in Iran

UN Chronicle, Dec, 1991

Security arrangements for the Persian Gulf region were discussed during Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar's visit to Iran from 10 to 13 September. He stressed that countries of that region had to coordinate their approaches and efforts.

In talks with President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati, various paragraphs of Security Council resolution 598 (1987), which remained to be fully implemented, also came under discussion.

The Iranian President informed the Secretary-General of the effects the destruction caused by the war with Iraq had had on the Iranian economy.

Resolution 598, adopted unanimously on 20 July 1987, calls for a cease-fire between Iran and Iraq; an end to all military action on land, at sea and in the air; withdrawal of forces to internationally recognized boundaries; dispatch of a team of UN observers to supervise those actions; and release and repatriation of prisoners of war.
