Trucks amok
Washington Monthly, Nov, 2007 by Charles Peters
Could heavy trucks have had something to do with the collapse of that bridge in Minneapolis? They were found to have been a factor in the 2000 collapse of Milwaukee's Hoan Bridge. A forty-ton truck, which is supposed to be the weight limit for interstate highways, according to the Associated Press, "does as much damage to the road as 9,600 cars." Yet some states allow even larger trucks on their highways.
Last year, Texas alone issued nearly "39,000 such permits."
