Washington Monthly, July, 2001

Image is everything.

"How do I know you are genuine? ... The words you say are important, but they are much less important than the visuals and the vocals."

~ Mark Montini, a trainer at the Leadership Institute for ambitious young Republicans

Gale Norton's multiple-use dream

From a report issued by Fred Thompson and the Committee on Governmental Affairs: "According to an internal agency report, the Algodones Dunes in California have become `unsafe for family recreation activity,' due to drug and alcohol use arid general lawlessness. Near-riots on weekends feature crowds hurling beer cans and other objects at rangers, and yelling, `Kill the cops.' During Presidents' Day weekend, one ranger was hit with a bag of fecal matter, while another was injured when deliberately run over by a dune buggy."

"The youth of our nation is the dearest mirror of our performance." ~Robert F. Kennedy

"You know, I haven't made up my mind, so I haven't like, I have not getting to the point of being able to, you know I don't want to start answering ... specific questions about the race. I will let you know if I decide to race"

~Max Kennedy, 2001, on whether he would run for Congress. He ultimately decided not to.
