> Tennessee vegetarians are furious that Gov. Don Sundquist refuses to proclaim a "Vegetarian Month." Yet meatlessness has long been a politically charged issue for Volunteer State governors. In, 1986, Gov. Lamar Alexander christened World Vegetarian Day and was attacked by the meat industry, which led to an impressive political pirouette: To appease pro-meat constituents, he served beef at a "Vegetarian Day" luncheon.
