But they love Britney Spears
Washington Monthly, April, 2005 by Charles Peters
There have been a lot of stories recently about the sorry state of American high schools, illustrated by falling test scores and other alarming evidence. But nothing I have seen has dismayed me as much as this revelation of the high school student's ignorance of the First Amendment. Asked if they agreed that newspapers should be allowed to publish stories freely without government approval, only 51 percent of students said yes, according to a survey conducted by the Knight Foundation.
In other words, 49 percent think that government approval should be required.
