Our new pill totally cures cancer
Washington Monthly, July-August, 2005 by Charles Peters
Have you suspected that a good many of those pharmaceutical ads you see on television exaggerate the benefit of the drug being peddled? According to USA Today, 36 percent of FDA complaints to drug companies about their promotional materials concern "unsubstantiated or misleading efficacy claims." Fifty-seven percent of the complaints say that the ads "minimized or omitted risk information or made it hard to read." Unfortunately, the FDA does not complain or demand changes in ads nearly often enough.
The agency has only 40 people to review more than 30,000 promotions every year.
