The Radical Center - Review
Washington Monthly, Sept, 2001 by Bruce Reed
A hundred years ago this September, the most radical centrist of all became
president upon the death of William McKinley. Don't hold your breath waiting for Bush to commemorate Teddy Roosevelt in the Rose Garden. Karl Rove always said that the 2000 campaign was 1896 all over again, with Bush a modern-day McKinley and Rove the new Mark Hanna. No wonder we long for something grander than Bushism. Even its heroes manage to lower expectations.
BRUCE REED, formerly Bill Clinton's domestic policy adviser, is now president of the Democratic Leadership Council.
