Cut The Cord On Scams - Credit card fraud - Brief Article

Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, Oct, 2000 by Melynda Dovel Wilcox

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) reports an increased number of phone scums designed to get consumers to reveal their credit card numbers. Callers may pose as employees of credit card issuers updating account information or offering account protection. With the first 12 digits of a card number in hand, they may ask for the last four numbers and the expiration date.

"No financial-services company will ever ask you to provide that," says Michele McDaniel, president of the BBB of North Alabama, who adds that giving someone even part of your account number can lead to fraudulent charges.
