Campus card crackdown, etc - credit cards for students - Brief Article

Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, April, 1999 by Melynda Dovel Wilcox

CREDIT TIGHTENING: Colleges are making it tougher for credit card issuers to solicit on campus. Concerned that students are piling up too much debt, some schools are banning credit card companies, while others are charging marketers more to set up tables, relegating them to less-traveled areas on campus and limiting their visits to a few days.

BUT CAN YOU FLIP THEM? Visit www.cyberaction.com for a look at the latest in sports memorabilia: digital baseball cards. For $3.95 you can download a pack of three or four cards along with audio and video clips, such as a 1920s film of Babe Ruth. Online trading should begin this summer.

THE DOWNSIDE OF CHEAP GAS: For the first time ever, the IRS has lowered the standard mileage reimbursement for business use of a personal car. Effective April 1, the rate falls from 32.5 cents per mile to 31 cents.

FREE-FOR A PRICE: At www .netzero.net you can get free Internet access-if you're willing to put up with a window of advertising that stays on your screen every time you go online. You also have to fill out a customer profile so advertisers can target you more accurately. Call 888-638-1376 for a CD-ROM version of NetZero if you don't already have Internet access.
