iPAQ:MULTIMEDIA IN YOUR POCKET - COMPAQ'S iPaq Pocket PC; $599 - Brief Article - Evaluation

Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, May, 2001 by Michael J. Martinez

TECHNOLOGY Once you figure out how to use it, Compaq's mini PC delivers LOTS OF FEATURES.

COMPAQ'S iPaq Pocket PC doesn't grab headlines like the popular Palm Pilot, possibly because it can be a bit daunting to use at first. While the Palm's operating system stresses simplicity, Compaq uses Microsoft's more complex system. But the iPaq offers a multitude of features that more than make up for a short ride up the learning curve.

In addition to the usual applications, such as datebook, address book, calculator and notepad, the iPaq has a built-in digital voice recorder, digital music player, Web browser, mapping software, Microsoft Reader for electronic books--and the list goes on.

You can start your day on the bus by reading previously downloaded newspapers while listening to music, then take notes for a morning meeting, confirm a follow-up by e-mail, locate a restaurant, figure out the tip, and finish your day by reading an ebook on the way home from work.

Price is the drawback. The iPaq goes for $599 on Compaq's Web site (versus about $349 for a comparable Palm Vx). The wireless Internet package for the iPaq costs $299, plus $60 a month for service. By comparison, OmniSky sells its wireless modem for the Palm V and Vx for $299 and offers service for $40 a month. Plus, OmniSky's plans include an activation rebate of up to $100.
