Fun With Mutual Funds - financial board game - Brief Article

Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, August, 2001 by Glen Mayers

THE CREATORS of Take $tock (Hart Toys, $24.95; www .takestockgame.com) have come up with an inspired idea for a financial board game. It's a knockoff of Monopoly, in which players buy groups of color-coded stocks to build mutual funds. Pass the opening bell and collect $20,000. Pick a Bear Market card and go directly to Trading Halts till you pay a fine or roll doubles. Get the idea?

The game follows Monopoly so closely you may yell "rent" (instead of "dividend") when someone lands on a company you own. But familiarity breeds fun. We played with a 12-year-old and a one-hour limit. When the timer went off, the 12-year-old begged for five more minutes to nail down a victory.
