"A los Ancestros"

Performing Arts & Entertainment in Canada, Autumn, 2002 by Sarah B. Hood

Carlos Placeres "A los Ancestros" Analekta AN 2 9807.

With a profound awarness of his many cultural forebears -- Spanish, Yoruba, American and more -- Montreal-based Cuban jazz musician Carlos Placeres dedicates this recording to the ancestors. Backed up by an able foursome of Quebec musicians, he turns out some fine tracks, like the playful title song "Ancestros", which combines flamenco guitar work, salsa, West African chant and drumming with what sounds like a Klezmer tang. Those who went before must be pleased.
