Television and film screenwriter Donald Martin was awarded the first-ever Gemini Humanitarian Award at the Gemini Awards on October 29. Founded by the Global Television Network, the award recognizes the philanthropic effirts of a professional in the Canadian television industry, and includes a $10,000 donation to a charity of the winner's choice.
Martin won the award for his caring intervention in the life of Colombian-born Luis Oswaldo Rodriguez. Martin sponsored Rodriguez through Foster Parents Plan for eleven years. When the two met in peron. Martin learned of the younger man's dream of becoming a doctor, and took it upon himself to make that dream a reality. He is directing the award money to Foster Parents Plan.
