When Rep. Denise Majette decided to seek a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, some of her supporters wondered whether the first-term congresswoman, who only a year ago toppled veteran Rep. Cynthia McKinney in Georgia, was too hasty in running for a U.S. Senate seat. After all, since Reconstruction, no Black from the South has been elected to the senior body on Capitol Hill.
But not only did the ambitious woman win the Senate Democratic nomination, she has become the favorite to win the seat this fall. Thus, she and Illinois state senator Barack Obama well may be the celebrated newcomers to the Senate next January ...
