John Batiste, deputy chief of the Port of Seattle Police Department, has been named the first Black chief of the Washington State Patrol. Before joining the Port of Seattle police, Batiste was a state Trooper for 26 years. Batiste obtained a bachelor's in Law Enforcement Administration from City University and is currently studying for a master's degree.

In his new position, Batiste will oversee the department, focus recruitment and retention problems and pay raises for state troopers.
