U.S. Rep. Davis Fights To Save Teen Summer Jobs, Housing Assistance
Jet, August 3, 1998
Responding to GOP action in a House committee to eliminate two crucial programs for the nation's poor, Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL) called on Congress to restore funding for Low-Income Home Assistance and the summer jobs program for disadvantaged teenagers.
"I intend to fight these harmful cuts when the full House votes later this summer," said Davis.
In June, Republicans on the House Labor/HHS/Education Appropriations Subcommittee voted to eliminate the two important programs. The bill is expected on the floor of the House later this month.
"More than 192,000 households in Illinois receive heating and cooling assistance," Rep. Davis, who represents Chicago, pointed out. "Two-thirds of people who receive home energy assistance make less than $8,000 a year. Taking away their assistance to pay heating and cooling bills could be disastrous."
He said some 11,570 young people in Illinois are working this summer because of federal summer job programs. He added, "Having them on our streets instead of working is a crazy plan that is detrimental to their futures and to our communities."
