POWERFUL EXAMPLE OF COURAGE: President Clinton hugs Pleasure Heard, 18, before boarding Air Force One at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Heard managed to graduate at the top of her class at Englewood Technical Preparatory Academy in Chicago in spite of being burned over 40 percent of her body by a gang member who doused her with alcohol and set her on fire (JET, July 10).

The tenacious Heard studied in the hospital until she returned to school where she kept her No. 1-ranking. Clinton was so inspired by her story that he wrote her a letter, calling her a "powerful example of courage" and said that he wanted to meet Heard, now a student at the University of Chicago, the next time he was in the Windy City. Clinton was in Chicago to address the 54th annual meeting of Trial Lawyers of America.
