Mannie Jackson, owner and chairman of the Harlem Globetrotters, was elected as an at-large member of the American Red Cross Board of Governors. The board has stewardship over the entire Red Cross, which operates on an annual budget of $2.3 billion and has 33,500 employees and 1.2 million volunteers. Jackson is the first Black to own a major international sports and entertainment organization.
James L. Whigham, a retired deputy superintendent for the Chicago Police Department, was sworn in as U.S. marshal for the Northern District of Illinois. Whigham, who served with the Chicago Police for 33 years, was nominated by President Clinton for the new post. He is the first Black marshal in the district. The marshal's office provides security for courts and coordinates searches for federal fugitives.
Antoinette Malveaux, executive director of the Chicago-based National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), was promoted to president and CEO of the association. During her nine-year tenure with the NBMBAA, Malveaux tripled membership and increased the revenue base from $1.3 to $9 million. The NBMBAA is comprised of more than 5,000 Black business professionals, entrepreneurs and students.
Douglas V. Holloway, executive vice president of network distribution and affiliate relations for New York-based USA Networks, received the prestigious Vanguard Award, the highest honor in the cable industry. Holloway, who has been executive vice president since 1983, played a major role in USA Networks' acquisition of the Sci-Fi channel and the launching of Sci-Fi Channel Europe.
Tyrone Means, a managing partner in the Montgomery, AL-based law firm of Thomas, Means, Gillis, Devlin, Robinson and Seay, was sworn in as the first Black president of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA). The ATLA represents about 2,000 attorneys statewide. Means, who has practiced law 23 years in Alabama, has served as ATLA treasurer, secretary and vice president.
