Start Your Engines

START YOUR ENGINES: Washington, D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams sits in a Panos race car in Washington during a news conference to announce a 10-year agreement for the National Grand Prix of Washington for an annual race on the grounds of Robert F. Kennedy Stadium. Williams said the district hosts many guests and events, but racing is a first.

"No one has ever been able to say, `Ladies and gentleman, start your engines,'" Williams joked. A racing industry representative says they chose Washington because every aspect of racing is represented, including advertisers, manufacturers and autoparts makers. The first race weekend will be July 19, 2002. The event is expected to generate $350 million in revenue for the region over the span of the agreement.
