Harvard College names 1st Black, woman dean

Evelynn Hammonds was recently named dean of Harvard College, the undergraduate division of Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.

She makes history as the first Black and first woman dean of the college.

"I am honored to have this extraordinary opportunity to lead the college with its exceptional students at such an important period in its history," said Hammonds, who takes the post June 1.

She is Harvard University's senior vice provost for faculty development and diversity and the Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz Professor of the History of Science and of African and African American Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Hammonds joined Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 2002 after teaching at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

She holds a bachelor's degree in physics from Spelman College, a bachelor's in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, a master's in physics from MIT and a Ph. D. in the history of science at Harvard.
