Rufus Thomas Recuperating After Heart Surgery

Jet, August 10, 1998

Soul pioneer Rufus Thomas, best known for the 1964 soul classic Walking The Dog and 1970's Do The Funky Chicken, is recovering at his Memphis home after triple-bypass heart surgery.

Thomas, 81, was admitted to the hospital after suffering chest pains. He underwent six hours of surgery, his son, Marvell Thomas, said.

"His surgeon said his heart is as strong as anybody else his age, or any other age for that matter," he said. The famed singer was expected to be released home from the hospital at JET press time.

His recording career helped jump-start Sun Records, which also had Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash on its roster.
