The Hottest Females In Rap Music
Jet, Feb 21, 2000
The day of men as the only rappers to rock the mic in the recording industry has become a thing of the past. The quick-rhyming skills of female rappers--Eve, Lil' Kim, Foxy Brown and Sole--have proven that it's no longer a man's world when it comes to hip hop. With their sex appeal and sly charm laced with a hard edge, these ladies have stormed their way to the top of the record charts as the hottest females in rap music.
Newcomer Eve (Eve Jihan Jeffers) is without a doubt the baddest female rapper to hit the scene today. She's won the hearts of hip-hop lovers by representing as the First Lady of Ruff Ryders, a rap group featuring DMX, the LOX and Drag-On. She first put it down with the group on its compilation album with the song What Y'all Want. Her debut solo album, Eve: Ruff Ryders' First Lady, which features the hit Gotta Man, then went on to sell more than 1 million copies. The album's current single, Love Is Blind, which features Faith Evans, is winning her praises with its message of homegirl empowerment because it tackles head-on the issue of domestic violence. Dubbing herself a "pitbull in a skirt," Eve first appeared on the Roots hit You Got Me, which featured Erykah Badu, and BLACKstreet's Girlfriend/ Boyfriend with Janet Jackson and Ja Rule.
Lil' Kim (Kimberly Jones) may stand at just 5 feet tall, but she's become a female rap giant. The outspoken rap dynamo won a following as one of the first female rappers to show that women can look feminine and dress sexy and still rhyme just as hard as the men. Her songs that lifestyle of fine clothes, jewelry, automobiles, food and wine, have made her a favorite with rap audiences. She made her entrance into the rap world as a part of the group Junior M.A.F.I.A., headed by the late rap superstar the Notorious B.I.G. She appeared on the group's hit song Get Money with B.I.G. Her credits as a solo artist include the debut album Hard Core with the favorites Crush On You featuring Lir Cease, No Time featuring Puff Daddy and Ladies Nite featuring Missy Elliott, Da Brat, LeiSEye and Angie Martinez. She's also worked with the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige on Blige's smash tune I Can Love You.
The young hip-hop diva Foxy Brown (Inga Marchand) is still going strong since she first stepped to the mic at the age of 15 on LL Cool J's I Shot Ya, which featured Mobb Deep and Keith Murray. The 19-year-old continues to sizzle by showing that female rappers have a voice among men and can hold their own weight. In addition to being a member of The Firm, which includes Nas, AZ and Cormega, Foxy is enjoying solo success as well. In fact, she has generated such a huge following that when her solo debut album, Ill Na Na, was released, it went platinum without her having released a single of her own! Foxy's fans know her for the tunes I'll Be and Ain't No Nigga, both featuring Jay-Z, Ill Na Na and Get Me Home featuring BLACKstreet. She also appeared on Case's popular song Touch Me, Tease Me.
Sole (Tonya Johnston) is drop-dead gorgeous, soft-spoken and college-educated. And, the self-described former tomboy currently is one of the hottest new "rapstresses" to make her way on the hip-hop scene. Rap fans first fell in love with her style on JT Money's bullet-fast Who Dat. Her debut album, Skin Deep, is heating up the charts with the hypnotic-flowing song 4,5,6, featuring JT Money and Kandi Burruss of Xscape.
Da Brat (Shawntae Harris) first burst onto the rap scene in the early '90s and she's still making noise. She was first heard on Kriss Kross's hit song Da Bomb. Then, she went on to make hip-hop music history as the first female solo artist to garner a platinum album with the debut Funkdafied. Though considered a rap pioneer at 22, Da Brat keeps fans happy because she isn't afraid to change with the times. Her songs include Funkdafied, Give It To You and Sittin' On Top Of The World. She also appeared on the tune Ladies Nite, which featured Lil' Kim, Missy Elliott, Left-Eye and Angie Martinez.
Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott (Melissa Elliott) is hot, hot, hot--any way you slice it. She's carved her niche as a singer, rapper, writer, arranger and producer. She's worked with everyone from Janet Jackson to Ginuwine to Whitney Houston. And, between writing and producing hits for other musicians, she's had to manage a scorching rap career for herself. Her first album, Supa Dupa Fly, spawned the hits The Rain and Sock It To Me. Her new album, Da Real World, has cranked out the tunes She's a B--, All In My Grill and the current, Hot Boys.
Rah Digga (Rashia Fisher) is a part of Busta Rhyme's popular rap group Flipmode Squad. Holding down the fort as the only female in the group, Rah Digga considers herself the Harriet Tubman of hip hop. She first captured audiences' attention as a part of the group the Outsidaz, which includes Eminem. The group had a cameo on the tune Cowboy from the Fugees' Grammy Award-winning album The Score. She also appeared on Flipmode's hit song Cha Cha. Her songs Tight and Imperial, from her upcoming debut album Dirty Harriet, have made her one of rap's hottest female newcomers.
