Soulful award

"Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin receives the Damon J. Keith 16th Annual Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award (named in honor of U.S. Appeals Court Judge Damon Keith at right) from Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm (2nd, l) at a luncheon recently held in Judge Keith's chambers at the Theodore Levin Federal Courthouse Building in Detroit.

Atty. Melvin "Butch" Holowell (l), chair of the Democratic Party in Michigan, joins the festivities. The award celebrates and honors the achievements of great African-Americans. Past recipients of the award include Dr. Benjamin Carson, pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Mr. W. Frank Fountain, senior vice president, government affairs for DaimlerChrysler and chairman of the Board of Trustees at Hampton University.
