Caption: GRANTS AND GOODBYES: Dr. Michael Lomax (l), incumbent president and chief executive of the United Negro College Fund, shares a farewell handshake with retiring UNCF president and CEO William H. Gray, III at the recent 60th anniversary fund-raising dinner. The UNCF, the nation's oldest and most successful minority higher education assistance organization, received a $5 million software grant from Microsoft at the event. The software will be distributed in 2005 to assist with the UNCF's goals to provide better technology to its 39-member institutions, most of which have predominantly African-American student bodies.
