How to pack less and still dress your best

Jet, Sept 20, 2004

We despise them. Those perky people who sail carefree and unencumbered through the airport concourse while the rest of us lumber across the pedway bagged down like pack mules. She with her cute, compact carry-on case. He with his suave, sturdy shoulder tote. No baggage claim for her, la la la. No metal detector buzzers for him, hidey ho.

And what's that strange thing on their faces? Why, it's a smile. They're cheesing because they know the secret to stress-free traveling--savvy packing. Whether your trip is a few days or a few weeks, you can dress sharp and look different every day of your stay if you learn the secret of smart packing:

[check] Get the good stuff. You're dragging your overstuffed luggage on your trip and the handle breaks. The case hits the ground, pops open and out flies your hot pink fishnets and leather Catwoman mask. And it's not Halloween. And you're a guy. Embarrassment scale rating: 10. Spare your muscles and self-respect by investing in lightweight, yet durable luggage. Go for bags and cases with strong straps, handles and clasps. Look for models with sturdy wheels so you can roll your luggage with ease.

[check] Keep a list. Nothing is worse than arriving at your destination, opening your luggage and making the harsh discovery that something you truly need, like your reading glasses, medication or underwear, is missing because you forgot to pack it. So before you grab your suitcase, write out a list of everything you need for your trip. And refer to your checklist when you pack for the return trip.

[check] Combat the pack rat. Make it your mission to carry no more than two bags: one midsize suitcase or garment bag for clothes, one small tote for valuables and toiletries. Look for small versions of supplies--the key words are travel size--or buy small plastic containers to make your own space savers. Use resealable food storage bags to hold loose items like jewelry and cosmetics. If you have extra space, then pack one fun item extra. But just one.

[check] Stretch it out. Bring basic pieces that will carry you from day to night--a shift dress, A-line skirt, a pair of slacks, a tailored denim blazer or a cardigan, one pair of comfy, stylish walking shoes, one pair of dressy shoes. Stick to dark solid colors to hide grime and pack items that can work double duty. Wear T-shirts under a suit and under the sheets; wrap a piece of flowing fabric into a sarong skirt, shawl or head wrap. And plan your wardrobe around activities. Don't pack a swimsuit if you're going mountain climbing.

[check] Funk it up. The right accessories can revive your reruns, and they take up far less space in your case than extra clothes. Try colorful scarves, neckties and shawls, blingin' belts and glitzy jewelry.
