Jet, March 21, 2005

Legendary cabaret singer-pianist Bobby Short was among those honored by Citizens for NYC at the New Yorker for New York Awards benefit dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in the Grand Ballroom.

Other honorees included dancer-actor-designer Geoffrey Holder and wife, dancer Carmen de Lavallade; Pulitizer Prize-winning author Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. and wife Alexandra; and Adam Moss, editor-in-chief of New York Magazine, who accepted on behalf of that publication.

Short was honored during a musical salute performed by famed entertainers, including de Lavallade.

The New Yorker For New York Awards dinner raises funds each year for Citizens for NYC, a nonprofit organization founded in 1975.

Citizens for NYC mobilizes New Yorkers to improve their neighborhoods in the areas of urban environment, beautification, safety, poverty, youth service and entrepreneurship, and neighborhood diversity. It also provides small grants, workshops, information and assistance to more than 12,000 grassroots volunteer groups throughout the city's five boroughs.
