John Conyers honored

JOHN CONYERS HONORED: Congressman John Conyers Jr, (D-MI) (3rd, r) is congratulated for receiving the Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award during Judge Damon J. Keith's (2nd, l) 19th Annual Soul Food Luncheon at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. Keith, a 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge, recognizes Blacks who make notable contributions in their fields. Joining Conyers in the celebration are (l-r) Edsel B. Ford II, Ford Motor Company Board member; Judge Victoria A. Roberts, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan: Judge Sterling Johnson Jr., U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York; Kwame Kilpatrick, mayor of Detroit; and Judge Eric L. Clay, 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. About 500 people attended the luncheon, including songstress Anita Baker, who performed Lift Every Voice and Sing. Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-MI) presented Conyers with the award (inset).
