`Kmart Presents…. Sinbad's Soul Music Festival Part 5!' Debuts On Pay View

Jet, August 23, 1999

For the fifth consecutive year, superstar actor-comedian Sinbad has assembled a dazzling line up of the world's most acclaimed R&B artists.

Now, you can bring home the funk when a special, "Kmart Presents.... Sinbad's Soul Music Festival Part 5!" premieres on Viewer's Choice (Hot Choice) on Friday, August 20, 9 p.m. and repeats at 12; midnight (ET).

Among the musical stars on the pay-per-view special are Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan, The Stylistics, Roy Ayers, DeBarge, featuring El DeBarge, Morris Day and the Time, The SOS Band, The Gap Band, Deniece Williams, Eric Benet, Joe, Kenny Lattimore and Jon B.

The special was taped during Memorial Day Weekend in St. Thomas and promises to be TV's musical event of the year.

"Hold on to your hats because you are about to be blown away again with the FUNK," exclaims Sinbad. "Just when you thought it couldn't get any funkier ... just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, comes along, `Soul Music Festival Part 5.' Watching Smokey Robinson move on-stage with the excitement of a teenager that just got his first concert gig is enough to make you wanna holler and throw up both your hands (I think I heard that somewhere before). I have enjoyed making every Soul Music Festival over the past five years, and once again, I have to say, `It can't get no funkier than this!"

Kmart Corporation and Anheuser Busch Inc's Budweiser Beer are the co-sponsors of the televised special.

Sinbad's festivals have become a major event of the year among music fans. People all over the U.S. mark their calendars and plan their vacations around Sinbad's music fest.

"It's like a Black family reunion," he says. "This is not just about going to a concert--it's about the renewing of spirit.'
