School Superintendent In Nevada Under Fire For Using Word `Nigger'

Jet, August 28, 2000

A White Nevada school superintendent has found himself in a ton of hot water for using the word "nigger" when he spoke at a Black radio station.

Carlos Garcia, the new school superintendent for the Clark County Nevada (Las Vegas-area) district, was asked how he would prevent racism when he uttered the slur. "Niggers come in all colors. To me, a nigger is someone who doesn't respect themselves or others." He prefaced his remarks by saying that what he was about to say could be taken out of context.

Garcia, who came under fire for his choice of words, has since apologized repeatedly for making the remarks. School district officials haven't decided what, if any, form of discipline will be applied.
