Actress Phylicia Rashad Divorcing Sportscaster Husband Ahmad Rashad

Jet,  March 5, 2001

Famed TV actress Phylicia Rashad is ending her marriage to NBC-TV sportscaster Ahmad Rashad, according to news reports.

Ms. Rashad filed for divorce at Manhattan's Supreme Court. But the split is apparently amicable, the New York Daily News said. The couple has a 14-year-old daughter, Phylea.

Mr. Rashad was a star receiver for the National Football League's Minnesota Vikings before he joined NBC as a sportscaster.

It was the third marriage for both Rashads.

Ms. Rashad won fame as Clair Huxtable opposite Bill Cosby on the hugely successful "The Cosby Show," which was the nation's most-watched TV show in the '80s. She also starred on the CBS series "Cosby," which ran from 1996-2000.

Ahmad Rashad proposed to Ms. Rashad on national television on Thanksgiving Day in 1985.

A spokesman for Rashad issued a brief press statement: "Mr. Rashad is, of course, deeply saddened by the divorce proceedings. His first and foremost concern is that he and his family are allowed to deal with this in privacy."

Ms. Rashad declined to comment at JET press time.
