The event was held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Times Mirror Central Court. Madison, when named in 2000, became the first Black woman to hold the position as general manager at a network-owned station in a top five market. Known for her community involvement and corporate leadership, Madison has earned countless honors. She is active in organizations like the National Association of Black Journalists, the International Women's Media Foundation, the National Medical Fellowship and the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. The married mother of one is president of the alumni association of Vassar College, where she also serves on its board of trustees. Other Citizen of the Year honorees have included Muhammad Ali, Ray Charles and former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley.
