First Black Episcopal Bishop Elected In South

Jet, March 6, 2000

The Rev. Michael Curry was recently elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina.

He is the first Black Episcopal bishop elected in the South.

Rev. Curry, rector of St. James Episcopal Church at Lafayette Square in Baltimore, will lead the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina's 33,000 members.

"This is both a joyous and a humbling experience," Curry said. "I'm very grateful and very thankful, and really looking forward to being part of the life of the church in North Carolina."

Curry will oversee 250 pastors, confirm new members and participate in a rulemaking body within the national denomination.

He will be installed June 17, replacing the Rt. Rev. Robert Johnson Jr., who is retiring.

Blacks have served in the Southern diocese as suffragan bishops, essentially assistant bishops, but never as bishop.
