Jet, March 6, 2000
Denzel Washington's gripping performance of wrongly jailed boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter has landed him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in The Hurricane.
The only other Black nominee for the upcoming 72nd Annual Oscar telecast was Michael Clarke Duncan, who played a death-row inmate with special powers in the hit film The Green Mile. He received a nod for the Best Supporting Actor category.
Both films have been huge box-office successes and are still packing large crowds into theaters.
Washington is a previous Oscar winner, having garnered the coveted statuette for Best Supporting Actor in Glory.
The awards will be handed out March 26 in Los Angeles. It will mark the first time the show has been televised on a Sunday.
