NBA All-Star Vince Carter recently donated $1 mllion to his boyhood high school in Daytona Beach, FL.
The Toronto Raptors shooting guard's contribution will help Daytona Beach Mainland High School build the athletic center as part of a $40 million school replacement project expected to be completed by 2005, Volusia County schools spokeswoman Nancy Holland said.
As a senior at the school, Carter led Mainland to the state basketball championship in 1995.
"He has a very close attachment with Mainland High School and the community," Deputy Superintendent Tim Huth said, adding Carter thought this was one way of giving back.
Carter was drafted in 1999 and signed a six-year contract extension with the Raptors last year. He is ranked 5th in scoring with 24.7 points per game.
