Caption: WORLD SPEEDSKATING WINNER: Winner Shani Davis of the United States (c) congratulates silver medalist Mark Tuitert (L) of the Netherlands and bronze medalist Erben Wennemars, also of the Netherlands, on the winners podium during an award ceremony for the men's 1,500-meter event in the World Single Distances Speedskating Championships at Taeneung International Ice Rink in Seoul, South Korea. Davis, who in 2002 became the first Black to make a U.S. Olympic speed-skating team when he went to the Salt Lake Games as an alternate on the U.S. Short-Track Team (JET, Jan. 14, 2002), clocked 1:48.64 to win. The Chicago native previously won the silver medal at the World All-Around Championships and became the first U.S. man to qualify for the world championships in the sport's two disciplines, long track and short track.
