A true tennis legend

Former New York Mayor David Dinkins helps display the Althea Gibson tribute before the quarterfinals match during the recent U.S. Open tennis tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The pioneering Gibson, who died last Sept. 28 at 76, was the first Black to compete at Wimbledon and the U.S.

Championships, as the Open was known in 1950. She won singles titles at both events in 1957-58, part of the 11 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles she took overall. Gibson also excelled at golf, and became the first Black player on the LPGA Tour.
