SAMUEL JACKSON LENDS HELPING HAND: Actor Samuel L. Jackson paints the railing at the Lorraine Motel, now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum, in Memphis. Jackson joined volunteers at the Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark program and helped clean up the museum in preparation for the recent 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. King was killed on April 4, 1968 as he stood on the motel balcony. The museum, which chronicles the Civil Rights Movement in America, encompasses the historic motel. Volunteers replaced wallpaper, repainted walls, renovated exterior walkways and upgraded the surrounding landscape. At right, Jackson looks at the room where King stayed the night before he was assassinated. Jackson was an usher at King's funeral and later marched for equal rights in Memphis.
