Gerald "Bounce" Gregory, the bass singer who hit the distinctive low notes on The Spaniels' 1950s classic Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight, recently died in Gary, IN. He was 64.

Gregory was a member of the doo-wop group The Spaniels, formed in 1952, who won fame with the song Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight. His deep bass voice kicked off the introduction of the classic, which became the group's signature song.

James "Pookie" Hudson, the group's lead singer, penned the classic hit that has been covered by several musicians during the 1950s including The McGwire Sisters and Pat Boone. The group Sha-Na-Na, who had a television show in the '70s, closed the show by singing the tune each week.

The Spaniels were awarded the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation of the Smithsonian Institution in 1991.

Gregory's last performance with the group was in December last year.

Gregory's survivors were not reported at JET press time.
