Historic Black Schoolhouse

Jet, Sept 6, 1999

A HISTORIC BLACK SCHOOLHOUSE: Designated a "Treasure of the Month" by the Maryland Commission for Celebration 2000, The Sykesville (MD) Schoolhouse (1903), one of state's last remaining one-room schoolhouses used to teach Blacks, has been slated for historic preservation under the Save Maryland's Treasures program.

Attending the special recognition ceremony in front of the Carroll County, MD, site are (l-r) State Treasurer Richard N. Dixon, Hon. Eugene E. Johnson, Sr., president of the Sykesville (MD) Town Council; former student May Whiten, and Commission Chairman and State Comptroller William Donald Schaefer. The schoolhouse educated as many as 40 students a year in grades one through six during its operation. With the aid of a grant from the Maryland Historical Trust to begin restoration, the building will be restored to serve as a living history museum.
