Jet, Sept 6, 1999

BLACK JOURNALISTS' NEW PRESIDENT: Will Sutton, the newly elected president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), addresses the organization's recent "UNITY: Journalists of Color" convention in Seattle. Sutton, deputy managing editor of The News and Observer in Raleigh, NC, was elected during the convention and will serve a two-year term.

"There is a lot of work that has been done the last 25 years, but there is so much work that needs to be done in terms of diversifying newsrooms, particularly in terms of editing and visual groups, management, and then the bottom line, content," he said. Founded in 1975, NABJ has 3,100 members, 74 professional chapters and 51 student chapters and is the nation's oldest and largest organization of Black journalists.
