Shoulder Injury Sidelines Serena Williams At Toronto Tournament

Jet, Sept 6, 1999

Following her phenomenal victory in the Acura Classic in Manhattan Beach, CA (JET, Aug. 30), Serena Williams was forced to withdraw from the du Maurier Open tennis tournament in Toronto due to a shoulder injury sustained in practice.

The eighth-seeded Williams, who received a bye in the first round of the $1.05 million tournament, defaulted her second-round match against unseeded Silvija Tajala of Croatia.

Because of her default, Williams' spot in the draw went to 80th-ranked Amelie Cocheteux of France, a qualifying-round loser. Cocheteux was beaten, 6-4, 6-1, by Tajala.

"This is kind of a step back for me," Williams said, "because I planned on doing well at this tournament."
