Singer Mariah Carey Suffers Relapse
Jet, Sept 24, 2001
Mariah Carey, who entered a treatment facility on July 25 after having an emotional breakdown, allegedly has suffered a relapse and was hospitalized recently, several newspapers reported.
Sources told the New York Daily News that Carey, 31, was admitted to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. A UCLA spokesman said he could not confirm or deny if Carey was admitted to the hospital because patients' records are private.
Carey's spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, declined to comment on whether Carey, who was scheduled to tape a much-publicized interview with Barbara Walters for ABC's "20/20" at the time of her reported relapse, had checked into the hospital or if she remained under a doctor's care.
"She is resting in an undisclosed location. I can't say any more than that," said Berger, who noted that the "20/20" interview was postponed until a later date because the singer "needed more time to rest," Newsday reported.
A music source told the Daily News that Carey "may have tried to go back to work too soon."
"She had been meeting with executives at Virgin Records, and apparently she simply wasn't ready for that," the source said, the Daily News reported.
The Grammy Award-winning singer suffered a breakdown in July after completing work on her upcoming movie, Glitter, and its soundtrack, as well as work on the film Wise Girls. Carey entered a treatment facility after her mother, Patricia Carey, made a 911 call for help after the singer broke glasses and dishes during an angry outburst. She was released from the facility in August.
