Jet, Sept 30, 2002

Starting almost 30 years ago as a cataloger, Beacher J. E. Wiggins has worked up to the rank of acting associate librarian for Library Services at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. He is the first Black to hold the post.

The director for cataloging since June 1997, Wiggins will replace Winston Tabb who was named to head the libraries of Johns Hopkins University.

He will serve while the library recruits and appoints a permanent associate librarian.

James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, credited the Black man for "making significant and valuable contributions" to the library. Said Wiggins, "I am extremely honored by the confidence placed in me to step in this role."
