Ali, appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 1998 for his humanitarian efforts, and fellow UN Messengers of Peace-journalist Anna Cataldi and wildlife researcher and conservationist Jane Goodall-joined UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for the ringing of the Peace Bell, a gift from Japan cast from pennies donated by children worldwide. Annan struck the bell three times to kick off the 59th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which was attended by 100 world leaders. The secretary-general called for the world to strengthen collective security, tackle humanitarian emergencies, promote global development and foster greater tolerance.
