Howard University President H. Patrick Swygert was recently appointed by President Clinton to chair one of six new branches of BusinessLINC (Learning, Information, Networking and Collaboration), a national program to boost business in U.S. cities H. Patric and economically distressed areas.

Swygert will chair the Washington branch. It joins those in New York, Dallas, Boston, Chicago and the Mississippi Delta in an attempt to spur economic growth in troubled communities by linking small business with large corporations.

In addition to increased job opportunities, the program provides mentoring for small businesses by larger corporations and recycles money back into blighted areas.

"I am pleased to offer my assistance and certainly happy to see that the highest level of federal government has recognized the importance of a connection between academia and the business community," Swygert said. "It is critical that we do all we can do to make sure these small businesses have access not only to capital, but also to technology."
